Can you legally throw biodegradable items out of a car in Michigan?

There are several things I see my fellow drivers in Michigan doing that drive me crazy.

For example, people who don’t know how to merge, or people on the highway who sit in the left lane and hold up traffic.

Another thing is people throwing cigarette butts on the street.

Not only are cigarettes dirty, but according to EarthDay.org, cigarette filters can take up to 10 years to completely break down. The chemicals released can remain in the environment for many years, even beyond the life of the cigarette butt itself.

But what about other things that are actually biodegradable? Can you throw them away?

Throwing any type of trash, including fruit peels, out of a car window is considered littering in Michigan and is against the law.

The Michigan Vehicle Code specifically states that it is illegal to “throw or deposit waste upon any highway, road, street, alley, or other public or private property or body of water” from a vehicle.

Littering in Michigan, even small items like fruit peels, can result in fines of up to $500.

Biodegradable products such as fruit peels are still considered litter and are not exempt from the law.

They can take months to break down and can attract animals to the side of the road, which can be dangerous.

I have to admit that I never thought about the fact that throwing a piece of eaten fruit out of the car could be dangerous, but it does make sense.

Basically, if you have something you want to get rid of, just wait until you stop your car and throw it in the appropriate trash bin.
